The Emergence of Boron Trifluoride in Welding

Boron trifluoride (BF3) is a colorless, toxic, and corrosive gas that has found significant use as a welding aid.  Over the years, the welding industry has consistently sought better, more efficient, and cleaner methods to improve the quality of welds while minimizing environmental impact.  The introduction of boron trifluoride as a welding aid has helped to address some of these challenges.

Properties of Boron Trifluoride

BF3 is a nonflammable and highly reactive gas.  It has the ability to form stable complexes with various metals, making it an excellent fluxing agent.  Its high reactivity also makes it a suitable shielding gas, preventing the formation of harmful oxides on the metal surfaces during the welding process.
